The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam eligibility criteria in India are set by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Here’s a detailed breakdown of the criteria:

1. Nationality:


The candidate must be:

  • A citizen of India, or

  • A subject of Nepal, or

  • A subject of Bhutan, or

  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or

  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam, with the intention of permanently settling in India.


Note: Candidates from Nepal, Bhutan, and other countries may have additional requirements for obtaining a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.

2. Age Limit:



  • The candidate must be between 16.5 to 19.5 years old on the 1st of January or 1st of July of the year in which the exam is being held.

  • For example, for NDA 2025, the candidate must have been born between 2nd July 2005 and 1st July 2008 (inclusive).


3. Educational Qualifications:



  • For Army Wing:

    • The candidate must have passed 12th standard (or equivalent) from a recognized board or university.



  • For Air Force and Naval Wings:

    • The candidate must have passed 12th standard (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.



  • For 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme (Naval Academy):

    • Candidates must have passed 12th standard (or equivalent) with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.




Candidates appearing for the 12th exam (or equivalent) are also eligible to apply for NDA, provided they can submit the proof of qualification before the final selection.

4. Gender:



  • Both male and female candidates are eligible to apply for NDA. However, the number of seats available for female candidates may be limited, particularly in the Army and Navy wings.


5. Marital Status:



  • The candidate must be unmarried at the time of joining the academy.


6. Physical and Medical Standards:



  • Candidates must meet the prescribed physical and medical standards for admission to the NDA.

  • Height: The minimum height required is usually 157 cm for men (for women, it may vary depending on the wing) with some relaxation for specific categories.

  • Vision: The candidate must have normal vision (minimum 6/6 in the better eye and 6/9 in the worse eye). The detailed medical criteria can be checked on the official NDA website or the official notification.


7. SSB Interview:



  • After qualifying for the written exam, candidates who are shortlisted are required to appear for the Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview, which assesses a candidate’s personality, intelligence, and physical endurance.
